Remembering Senator John McCain

Originally written September 2, 2018

Growing up during the Civil Rights and Equal Rights Movements and the Vietnam War, my belief in my country was something I never questioned. Never. I was taught the value and importance of voting by my family - my family of immigrants, military service members, farmers, business owners, government employees, and elected officials. I was taught the importance of my voice and the collective voice of Americans to do good in our community, our country, and the world. I was taught to respect the office and trust in the ideal that was America. Listening to President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama eulogize Senator John McCain I am reminded of leadership that respected the office and trusted in the ideal that is America. I am reminded and inspired to keep being the voice of America that does good in our community, our country, and the world. Ours is a voice that needs to be loud, needs to be ever present, and is just plain needed. The goodness of America is made great in our collective voices rising for the American ideal that America IS a place of goodness, IS a place of opportunity, and IS a place where we fight FOR humanity.
